- Algorithm : A formula or equation used to determine relevance on search engines.
- Keyword : A term used in a search for your product or service.
- Portal : A gathering place for a large numbers or Web users. Usually incorporating multiple functions such as searching capabilities, email, news, and special interest topics.
- Query : A series of terms which describes the desired information in a search.
- Rank : The specific order of a document in a search engine or directory.
- Redirect : When a user is sent to a URL other than the one pointing to the link which was accessed. Most commonly through the use of META REFRESH tags.
- Relevance: How well a result matches the keywords defined on a particular web site. Usually defined as a percentage.
- Search Directory : The most popular example of a directory is Yahoo. It is divided into a hierarchy format listing items in alphabetical order by pre-determined subject headings. - Search Engine : A search engine uses a collection or database of Web pages which are organized according to it's particular Algorithm which calculates certain keywords and phrases and Ranks your site according to that information. When your site is submitted to a search engine a program called a Spider retrieves your page and adds it to the search collection.
- Spider : A program that browses the Internet searching for URL links beginning at a Web page and traveling through each link it finds. The page information is indexed for the creation of a collection or database. Note: not all spiders roam the Web, some rely on direct submissions.
